Bicycle Helmet Program
- Consider this:
You are twelve years old and are looking forward to spending the day riding around the park with your friends. Most of them wear helmets already, but you didn’t have one until yesterday, when a Calgary paramedic came to your school to talk about bike safety. He gave helmets away to all the students who didn’t have one, and helped everyone to fit them properly. In your hurry to meet up with your friends, your tire bumps against the curb and you lose your balance. You can hear the sound of hard plastic as the side of your helmet hits the sidewalk. Aside from the shock of falling, you are unhurt and able to continue on your way.
Paramedics encourage cyclists to wear helmets all year long. The EMS Foundation and the Calgary Paramedics Charity Society raise funds to purchase CSA approved helmets. The program combines in-school presentations about bike safety and brain injury prevention, and assists with customised fittings.
