Husky Heroes
The Husky Heroes program is a partnership between Husky Energy (the sole sponsor), the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Foundation, and The City of Calgary Public Safety Communications (9-1-1).
The Husky Heroes program was created in order to:
- Educate youth on the proper use and access of our 9-1-1 services in the City of Calgary;
- Recognize child callers who accessed appropriately 9-1-1 for a fire, police, or ambulance emergency in Calgary and/or recognize children who were of significant help to emergency services at an emergency scene.
Youth in our community learn about the proper use and access of 9-1-1 through visits from emergency services personnel to their schools and youth groups. Children have the chance to ask various frontline emergency staff questions about emergencies as they relate to 9-1-1 and about their role as a paramedic, firefighter, or police officer. Children are also each provided with their own Husky Heroes poster and activity page as an educational resource.
Husky Heroes are nominated by Emergency Communications Officers (9-1-1) throughout the year. Each November, all Husky Heroes for the previous year are honored at an awards event to acknowledge the actions they took to help the well-being of someone else in an emergency situation.
In the last three years the program has recognized 22 young people, from ages three to 12 years old, who made the difference in an emergency situation by either calling 9-1-1 or assisting emergency personnel at the scene of an emergency.
